Name and address verification review tasks

Name and address verification results appear as review tasks on the Business object. This page describes their types, statuses, and messages.

Verify that the submitted business name matches official records and identify potential discrepancies.

dba_name review task

Verify that the submitted DBA (Doing Business As) name matches official records.

address_verification review task

Confirm the submitted office address exists and matches against verified address databases.

Address matching criteria

If no verified match is found, Middesk checks these outcomes in order and stops at the first match:

Approximate Match: The addresses are within the account’s configured radius. The default is 0.2 miles—about 1,000 feet, or a few city blocks depending on location.
Similar Match: No approximate match was found. The normalized streets match, ignoring unit numbers, and either the city and state or postal code matches.
Incomplete Match: Neither earlier condition matched. The submitted address has no street, but its city and state match a retrieved address.

Contact your account manager to adjust your account’s approximate-match radius.

The table shows the default radius. The API message reflects the account’s configured value.

address_cmra review task

Identify if the address is a commercial mail receiving agency rather than a physical business location. If a submitted address is tagged by USPS as a Commercial Mail Receiving Agency, a business does not operate at this address, which may be a fraud indicator.

address_deliverability review task

Verify whether USPS can deliver mail to the submitted office address.

location_frequency review task

Determine how many businesses share the same address to identify potential virtual offices or shared spaces.

Identify if the address belongs to a registered agent service rather than the business’s actual location.

entity_type_match review task

Verify that the submitted entity type (LLC, Corporation, and so on) matches the entity type on the domestic registration.

To use the entity type review tasks, submit an entity type with the business’s formation. See the POST /businesses endpoint for more details.
