# Document object

> Lists the contents of a document object.

This page describes the `document` object, which provides downloadable business filing documents (like Articles of Incorporation and Certificates of Good Standing) retrieved directly from government sources, eliminating the need for manual document collection.

In retrieving filings directly from the source, Middesk also provides the ability to download documents related to these filings.
Often, retrieving these documents can supersede the process of reaching out to an individual and requesting upload through a document capture flow.

## Document attributes

| Attribute         | Type              | Description                                                                                                                                                                                        |
| ----------------- | ----------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `object`          | string            | The object type. Always `document`.                                                                                                                                                                |
| `id`              | string (uuid)     | The unique identifier for the document record.                                                                                                                                                     |
| `document_type`   | string            | The type of document. For SOS documents, Articles of Incorporation are `Initial_Filing` and Certificates of Good Standing are `Certificate of Good Standing`. UCC1 documents are `Initial Filing`. |
| `filename`        | string            | The filename for the document.                                                                                                                                                                     |
| `content_type`    | string            | The media type for the document, like `application/pdf`.                                                                                                                                           |
| `size`            | integer           | The size in bytes of the document.                                                                                                                                                                 |
| `download_url`    | string            | URL for downloading the document contents.                                                                                                                                                         |
| `created_at`      | timestamp         | The time the document was retrieved for the Business.                                                                                                                                              |
| `source`          | object            | The source for the document. In many cases, these are a link to a Registration record.                                                                                                             |
| `source.type`     | string            | The source type (for example, `registration`).                                                                                                                                                     |
| `source.id`       | string (uuid)     | The ID of the source record.                                                                                                                                                                       |
| `source.metadata` | object            | Additional source metadata.                                                                                                                                                                        |
| `filing_date`     | timestamp \| null | The date the document was filed.                                                                                                                                                                   |
