# Quickstart—Register an entity for payroll taxes

> Begin using Middesk to register employers for payroll taxes.

Learn how to use the Middesk API and Dashboard to quickly request registrations from your employers.

#### Add a child account and company

To register employers for payroll taxes (SUI, SWH, and local taxes), first create child accounts associated with your partner account along with their companies. There are several ways to add child accounts and companies.

#### From referral links

Each partner account has a unique referral link to share with employers. Employers can self-sign up for the Middesk Dashboard using this link, and their account automatically connects to your partner account as a child.

#### From API requests

Create child accounts and companies through supported API endpoints:

* The Create Company endpoint directly creates a new child account and company under your partner account
* The [Create Registration Request](/api-reference/entity-management/registration-requests/create-a-registration-request) endpoint creates a new child account and company while also initiating a payroll registration request

#### From the Partner Dashboard

Add child accounts and companies in two ways:

* Add a single employer manually
* Bulk upload via CSV

For more information on inviting child accounts, see Invite employers.

#### Start a registration

After adding a child account, the next step is to begin a registration for payroll taxes. This can happen in several ways.

#### From the Employer Dashboard (initiated by the child)

Child accounts with access to the Employer Dashboard can initiate payroll registrations on their own. On their home page, they can start a new registration, select their state and jurisdictions, and complete the intake flow.

#### From a registration request (initiated by the partner)

Partners can request child accounts to register for payroll taxes through the following methods:

* **From the Partner Dashboard**. After adding a child account, request registrations by selecting states and jurisdictions for the employer to complete. The employer receives an email with a unique link to complete the requested registrations. From that link, the employer can only complete registrations for the requested states and taxes. However, if the employer also has access to the Employer Dashboard, they can start other registrations as well.
* **From the API (any tax)**. To create a unique link for employers to complete registrations without Dashboard access, use the Create Application endpoint. This generates a link for the employer to select which state and taxes they want to complete.
* **From the API (specific tax)**. Use the [Create Registration Request](/api-reference/entity-management/registration-requests/create-a-registration-request) endpoint to request a specific state and tax for the employer to complete. This generates a unique link for the employer to complete the requested registration with or without Dashboard access.

#### Receive registration results

After the employer or partner submits the intake flow, Middesk completes the requested payroll registrations. The collected account IDs and rates are delivered in several ways:

#### To the employer

**Email and Dashboard**. As registrations move through different statuses, Middesk sends notification emails to the employer. When a registration completes, the notification email includes a link to either the Employer Dashboard or a guest dashboard (a pre-authorized link requiring no login) where the item values are available.

#### To the partner

* **Dashboard**. When registrations complete, the items appear on the Accounts page of the Partner Dashboard and in the Available ID CSV Exporter tool.

* **Digest email**. Middesk sends digest emails (timing controlled by the partner: daily, weekly, or never) with counts of completed items to alert partners when they need to collect newly completed item values.

* **Webhooks**. Partners can consume webhooks that Middesk sends with the completed item values in the payload. These webhook events are:

  * `registration_request.updated`
  * `agent_jurisdiction_registration.updated`
